THE C.A.R.S. CAR-CARE GUIDE

Five questions to ask about a repair estimate.

A clear estimate helps you make an informed decision. These questions can turn an unfamiliar repair into a useful conversation.

1. What did the inspection or testing find?

Ask how the finding connects to the symptom you reported. A diagnostic code and a confirmed failed component are not always the same thing.

2. Which items are urgent, and why?

Ask the shop to explain safety concerns, reliability concerns and routine maintenance separately. A good question is: what happens if I wait?

3. What does the price include?

Ask about parts, labor, testing, fees and taxes, and whether additional work would require your approval.

4. Are there reasonable repair options?

Ask whether different parts or repair approaches apply to your vehicle and how they affect the estimate. The least expensive option is not automatically the best fit.

5. What should I keep for my records?

Save the estimate, authorization and final invoice with your mileage. A service history helps you and your next mechanic understand what has already been done.
